Abstract
The Nogulich Family Collection consists of eleven 8mm and Super-8 home movies shot by a Serbian-American Chicago family, mostly filmed in the former Yugoslavia (including modern day Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, and Croatia) in the early 1970s. One film was shot in Brooklyn by Lou Gomez, the father-in-law of Daniella Nogulich Gomez.

Donated by Natalija Nogulich in May 2024. The films had previously been stored by Natalija's sister Daniella Nogulich Gomez until her passing in 2023.

Nogulich, Walter

Walter (Wiff) Nogulich was born in Chicago in 1920, the son of Serbian immigrants Christ and Sofia Nogulich. He attended Lane Tech High School, and in his youth he excelled in various athletics at Hamlin Park. Later, Wiff enlisted in the U.S. Army and was one of the soldiers that landed in Normandy on D-Day with the 90th Infantry Division. His Campaigns included Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and two Presidential Citations. He was Honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on October 30, 1945.
He met and married Helen Mandusich at Old Holy Resurrection Church right after returning from the war. They had three children: Christ, Daniella and Natalija. He worked as a machinist, construction worker, electrical line man, and ultimately a letter carrier for the United States Post Office until he retired in 1985. He was very active in St. Steven of Decani Serbian Orthodox Church which he founded and then served as its President. Wiff's passion for sports continued into his sixties as he continued to play softball and later golf. Wiff enjoyed reading World War II books and writing poetry. He was a member of the National Army Museum, the National World War II Museum, the Battle of Normandy Foundation, the United Serbian Brotherhood, and St. Steven of Decani Serbian Orthodox Church. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 101.

Helen was born to Jake Allex and Velinka Mandusich in Sredska, Serbia in 1923 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1941. She attended night school to learn English and worked in a war plant until she met her husband Walter after World War II. They married in 1947, and had three children (Daniella, Natalija and Christ), who they raised in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago. Very active in the Serbian Orthodox Church community, the couple founded St. Steven of Decani in 1963 and Helen served as President of the Women's Circle of Sisters, while her husband served as President of the church. She passed away at age 97 on June 27, 2020.
Nogulich Gomez, Daniella

Daniella was born in Chicago in 1948 to Helen and Walter Nogulich. She had two siblings, Natalija and Christ. Daniella attended Bell School, Lake View High School, University of Illinois-Chicago and graduated from Lake Forest College in 1970, majoring in languages. After studying abroad and teaching Spanish in Chicago Public high school, she pursued her passion for filmmaking and attended Columbia College in Chicago. Daniella went on to direct films, music videos and ultimately became a renowned producer, working under the professional name Daniella Violet-Green. She was the recipient of five Clio Awards for her creative work in commercials.
Daniella was an active member of St. Steven of Decani Church in Chicago, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was Editor in Chief of the 40th Anniversary Commemorative Book. In 1989, she married Bob Gomez, and they enjoyed 34 years of marriage. She passed away November 7, 2023 at age 74.

Louis "Lou" Gomez was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1918. He married Dolores Lopez (b. 1919, Spain) in 1940, and they had two children: Diana and Robert (Bobby). Lou served in the Navy during WWII. He passed away September 1, 2006 in Niles, IL.
