Abstract
A compiled reel of home movies covering about a yearlong period, focusing on the Cooper children and other children in the community. This reel also depicts a parade in Iola, Wisconsin, an informal parade of Iola children, and a parade in neighboring Scandinavia, Wisconsin.
Description
This reel consists of multiple camera rolls compiled onto one reel by the Cooper family.
The first section, likely shot by Vera Cooper, begins with brief shots showing a small parade going down a street in Iola, Wisconsin. Participants carry American flags and a high school band marches. The next shot shows a parade of children and teenagers. They are marching around in the grass on a piece of land owned by the Cooper family. Some are wearing uniforms and playing brass instruments, followed by a gaggle of even smaller children. One of the children is Neil Cooper, who is wearing a yellow marching uniform hat. Other children are wearing cowboy outfits. Jane Cooper, age ~2, is wearing a summer romper. A teenager in a white band jacket demonstrates his baton spinning. Three girls horse around and do somersaults over each other. In a long shot, a neighbor who worked at the post office walks by on the main road. Neil marches through the field with his band hat and a red streamer, followed by the other children.
The next section begins with brief shots of the family at a picnic area in the woods. Jane plays with a ball on the sidwalk with a neighbor. A new scene shows a parade in nearby Scandinavia, Wisconsin. Children ride tricycles, bicycles, and horses at the head of the parade. Cars and vehicles go by, including a truck carrying the town band, a yellow truck from Clifton's Feed & Supply, a fire truck, and others pulling parade floats.
A new section begins with the Cooper family visiting friends who are beginning to build a house. They have only built the cellar and the front door so far. Everyone poses for the camera. Brief shots show the family's garden.
The fourth section of film begins with a shot of a boy, possibly Bill or Lloyd Cooper, riding his bicycle up to the camera. In a sightly overexposed section, Firman and Vera Cooper stand outdoors with their children and another couple with children. A new shot shows a friend of Vera Cooper's (in a long red coat) standing with her husband and daughters. Vera Cooper's parents, Lillian Belle Quimby and Leslie Quimby, are shown standing outdoors and playing with Jane. A small airplane flies overhead. The plane likely belongs to Hank, a neighbor who was a recreational aviator.
After a splice, the reel continues with a brief shot of a boat on a lake. In the next scene, Neil Cooper and some neighbor children are enacting a "mock wedding." Jane Cooper, in a red coat, joins them as they play. In a new scene, Vera Cooper's best friend Dolores Vore (neé Swenson) and her husband Lyle Vore walk toward the camera. Lyle carries their baby. In a long close-up shot, Dolores smiles at the camera while holding the baby.
