Taper, out of roundness, and other defects.

In order to do a complete brake job, the drum should be resurfaced.
Scored drums are a major cause of noise and poor pedal action.
Scoring is often caused by dirt trapped in the drum, or by lining which has been worn down to the rivet heads.
Sometimes bonded linings are worn to the shoe rim, causing this kind of scoring.
New linings will make poor initial drum contact and give erratic brake action, unless the drums are resurfaced as part of a total brake job.
Take care when resurfacing a drum.
When metal is removed, the drum may be weakened, and its ability to absorb heat is reduced.
Some drums should never be resurfaced.
Hard spots in a drum appear as discolored patches.
Hard spots result from excessive heat, which is often caused by repeated and hard brake application.
These hard spots are actually a change in the chemistry of the metal, and cannot be removed.
Turning and grinding does not correct this condition.
Discard drums with hard spots.
We strongly recommend replacement of all rubber and brake hardware parts.
These are as important to a good brake job as quality linings.
Many fine brake relines have come back because an old part failed.
Don't risk time, money, and your reputation by reusing old parts.
Springs that have lost their tension often cause noise, extra wear, and pulling.
Don't risk it.
Before starting work on a disc brake, use penetrating oil on bleeder screws, which may be frozen by dirt or rust.
If the screw breaks, you may have to replace the caliper.
Disc brake rotors are scored by road dirt and by normal braking.
These rotors are too heavily scored and can't be reconditioned by machining.
Use a lathe to recondition rotors which are still serviceable.
Rust and contamination can be removed by hand sanding with abrasives.
