Abstract
B/W Mich, NY + Mass starts with black and white shots of nature taken in the woods, possibly in Michigan or Monterey, MA, which JoAnn Elam visited often in the early 1980s. As in other film works by Elam, the camera focuses on the canopy, on tree leaves casting their shadows on the ground, and on dogs running among the trees, when it is not rushing through or panning rapidly over the woods in a series of rapidly edited shots. The second part of B/W Mich, NY + Mass takes place in a city, perhaps New York, where the camera continues to film at a fast pace, from a car driving in the busy streets.
