Abstract
Bullets and Bonbons, choreographed by Ruth Page, is based on the 1908 operetta "The Chocolate Soldier" by Oscar Straus, which is itself based on George Bernard Shaw's 1894 play, "Arms and the Man." The ballet was premiered in 1965, performed by Karl Musil from the Vienna Opera Ballet, and Irina Borowska. This film represents an earlier rehearsal version in practice clothes, performed by some of Page's company dancers in a ballet studio. The film canister label suggests that this rehearsal was conducted without music, and describes the portions rehearsed as the ending waltz from Act II and a pas de deux from Act I.
Description
The film opens with a shot of a man and woman wearing practice clothes in a ballet studio. They begin to rehearse a pas de deux, and the camera occasionally cuts during the process; they sometimes repeat a portion. About halfway into the film, the screen goes black and the two begin a new pas de deux. It includes an apparent disagreement over a "photograph," after which he exits and she continues to dance a loving solo with the photograph prop. When she completes this solo, the film again cuts to a pas de deux, apparently from earlier in Act I, when he has just proposed to her. The film ends while they are still rehearsing.
