You Would carry his picnic basket would he bring it in his paw or where you think he'd carry his food? your choice and theirs Individual choices each of us makes every day Which have a great effect on how we live and how well as a nation? It's often said that we Americans are overfed and undernourished that we eat under a cloud of nutritional ignorance To determine what Americans should learn about nutrition the White House conference on food nutrition and health Worked several years to formulate basic concepts everyone should know These concepts are the key ideas of food your choice The seven concept areas are nutrition the effect of food on energy growth and health Nutrients their relationship to help Food handling its effect on health and food quality the life cycle its effect on nutritional needs of people Social psychological needs the influence on food choices food technology its impact on the food supply nutrition and society and interdependence Big words big subject How do you bring those concepts down to a size a child can get hold of? That's the task of food your choice That you might see a great america A cat and what's that? Do you have a cat at your house Food your choice Takes the big words and thoughts of the White House concepts and cuts them into child -sized bites The pizza by you now, I don't want anybody to eat anything yet.

Okay, we're just going to pass everything out first Go ahead and take them back to you have enough for your table.

Okay, go sit down then Yeah, right in here right and you can put the plate right over there You're doing a nice job Food your choice was thoroughly tested in actual classroom situations Teachers who use the pilot program contributed their ideas their experience with what worked well and what didn't The program was revised accordingly Many times that I taught some of the activities there were people in here observing me And as soon as the activity was over I would discuss with the people what we had thought were the strengths of the activity That day what were some of the weaknesses from the aspect of the teacher? The units were set up so that you knew what the specific objective was that you were going to be teaching for that day You knew the materials that you would use that day and the materials that the student would be needing that day And they also gave a list of activities in which you could reach this objective Whatever you thought that your children would need in order to reach that basic objective This will help answer that question, do you know where raisins come from? Food your choice was formulated in conjunction with a blue ribbon group of more than 30 educators nutrition specialists And dairy council staff personnel It was tested in schools all across the country From orlando florida to cheney washington The result is a curriculum that dovetails easily into many differing classroom environments What should we do look at the glasses those two look at the glasses I think they're talking about the pictures right here.

Where did that come from? Look at your picture Where did it come from? 50 million.

All right, then that's the one you're going to mark isn't it? You want to mark your picture beth not in the glass On your paper Right right now you have you guys got your do you want to do yours? Do you want to mark yours? Fine do you understand what we did? Yes.

Let's do smart Yep This is an alternative class Which means multi -age non -graded working independently And a highly individualized program we are free to extend ourselves outwardly in many directions So that sometimes we work on one particular Subject but then we include as many other things as possible We may start with science and it may lead us to math social studies to nutrition And so this was an ideal curriculum the activities that were the doing kinds of things were the ones that the children enjoyed the most the experiments the food tasting of taking chemicals out of Vegetables they enjoyed very much Is she coming up? I Hope that we'll be able to show the other boys and girls how to do this experiment So i'm going to ask you to teach them.

Oh, that'd be all right.

I'm gonna teach them I'll probably should start right about there.

Now watch it leave it too Looks like we got a bigger problem you For sure, bring it again.

Carly.

Okay Look at the pile spring that's always a measure and holds the most This is the paper that you'll need when you're ready.

Here are scissors Okay, okay Oh Level one of food your choice goes from kindergarten through second grade Level two through third and fourth grade level three through fifth and sixth A child is exposed to the same key concepts at each level Reinforcing what he has learned before Building to more complex ideas on a firm base Do any of you know any mexican children the other school there was a little mexican girl, what was her name mary mary? All right What about jesse? Jesse lives in georgia georgia.

I know a boy jesse jesse james All right He had a peanut butter And bacon sandwich on toast.

Oh my how many of you have ever had that for breakfast? How about you scott butter on With the peanut butter and the bacon we're getting some interesting sandwiches Leo leo lives where In new york he looks just like an american boy all american boys We may find out something a little more about leo All of these children come from different ethnic backgrounds And we're going to fry the tortilla, but if we're not going to make it hard we're going to let it soak.

Okay So we can bend it and that really tastes So there's two kinds Do you have a crazy cheese The only kind of cheese that uses um cheese or yes, we can use that that's the best to use it cherry cheese, okay Cutting slices, right? Okay now if um you like you put a little bit of this sauce around taco sauce and that really will give it Food your choice a balanced comprehensive program that grows with the child That gives him guidelines for making better food choices A sense of what combinations of food the human body thrives on Long time ago my country we don't have another kind we use this kind and make more pretty This kind you can make a shape like that and age we can do some decorate But nowadays everybody makes You know like with that and just put this way and make a triangle scale triangle and much easier Other important benefits children learn more about each other different cultures different foods and lifestyles Children learn to appreciate differences and respect diversity Now Food your choice is designed to fit hand in glove with your regular curriculum We do need a nutrition program as far as I can see especially in the primary grades.

You're very concerned about Teaching reading and math and I think when you've got a program set out for you At least it can serve as a guideline And I think if you start out the program with good feelings we say it's warm and fuzzy feelings That as they get on to the upper levels, they'll think oh, I remember this and they'll have good feelings about what had happened before Food your choice a balanced comprehensive program that grows with the child At the beginning of each unit of the program the teacher is provided with an overview That spells out how each lesson relates to other subjects Thus the program becomes a way to expand a child's understanding To relate many subjects to nutrition and nutrition to the child's life So
