You You The city big fast complex The city is today These young people are a part of the living city.

They have needs physical social psychological They have a youthful energy and intelligence They are unskilled but not unwilling Will their energy be used for a productive purpose and for their economic self -sufficiency? Will they find a place in today's city? Today's youth is confronted with complex and extensive changes which have occurred in all areas of life Society more and more looks to the schools for help in meeting the problems growing out of accelerated social change technological advancement and the imbalance they create In order to meet the educational needs generated by these changes The school must expand present educational offerings for students whose needs are not being met by the traditional academic and vocational programs It must offer Realistic programming and guidance which will assist each student to gain the insights and Self -assurance he needs for his first encounter with the world of work Contemporary education sees no boundary between the mind and the hand rather the whole individual is recognized and his needs his desires and His abilities are a concern of the educational process The cooperative work training program of the Chicago Board of Education is designed to bridge the gap between school and work Through this program willing students are given the opportunity to gain skills training and work experience in supervised employment along with the occupational knowledge gained many students begin to experience a sense of security an Improved self concept and a change in aspirations and goals Clarence is a student in the cooperative work training program His first contact was with a teacher coordinator with whom he discussed the feasibility of his joining the program Clarence filled out an information sheet which provided background data and future plans a Conference was held with Clarence's mother to inform her of the details of the program and To secure her approval for his participation Program changes were made to assure his fulfillment of academic requirements while a member of the program Results of a vocational interest inventory for assessing aptitudes Clarence's stated preference and Discussions with the coordinator led to a decision to apply for a part -time job in a local store The school coordinator who must have had at least one year of experience in industry business or service occupation made the initial contact with a potential employer and arranged for a job interview Clarence was given final advice and encouragement by the teacher coordinator The rest was up to him He filled out an employment application and discussed with the manager his reasons for wanting the job and the Contribution he felt he could make as an employee Clarence was hired as a service clerk He spends a half day in school and the other half day on his job Besides his earnings he receives a school grade for his job performance after periodic evaluation by the teacher coordinator who visits Clarence on the job and Discusses his progress with his supervisor If any problems arise they can be quickly looked into before they get too big this close interaction between business and school helps information to flow freely and benefits all in school Cooperative work training students take courses in English social studies math and physical education which allows them to meet school requirements a related information class taught by the teacher coordinator Provides instruction in those areas which concern the students status as employees Topics include care of equipment on the job Courtesy and service personal appearance promptness and absenteeism job safety taxes and qualifications for promotion Emphasis in the related information curriculum centers around the development of positive attitudes and Is designed to assist the student in affecting an orderly transition into the world of work? our Schools must be flexible in order to provide for the diverse needs and abilities of our youth Cooperative work training has been structured to provide this flexibility The wide range of learning experiences which cooperative work training offers students extends into every phase of American industry and service The need for this program is evidenced by its rapid growth during the past three years from the starts of one program with 16 students the cooperative work training program now has 23 programs and includes 855 students who will have earned over 1 million dollars this year you you you you you The successful implementation of the cooperative work training program has involved the cooperation of many individuals institutions and businesses you What is the measure of success For the students it is the acceptance and recognition he receives from his employer his family and his peers For the employer it is having employees with enthusiasm motivation and skill which the students acquire For the teacher coordinator it is the satisfaction that he has helped one more student a little closer to the realization of his objectives and for society it is an educational program which holds for many young people an answer for today and a promise for tomorrow you you
