You You These are the children for whom we care They come to us from all over Billy Joe came from North Carolina Celeste from Paris others from Mexico Venezuela Chile Most of them from our mammoth city All together more than 25 ,000 of them in just one year 8 ,000 slept in our beds Two -thirds of them came to our clinics All of them were treated More than 50 a day came to our emergency room Some had illnesses that responded to medicine Elizabeth has leukemia the road she travels has its limits now tomorrow may be brighter Some are battered Some are brave Many had surgery more than 5 ,000 Bones had to mend Some worked hard at getting better Encouragement is our way of life Others try and fail and try again But know the day will come A Mother must be taught to change addressing measure insulin supervised exercise There's the gargantuan task of dealing with reality You How do you tell a parent you don't know what's wrong Harder still how do you tell them when you do know and there's nothing can be done You Can you keep a child from knowing You The language of life is no foreign tongue it speaks early the problem comes in trying to understand it Here is a new life How will it grow? Prick his heel he can spare that drop of blood it might make the difference between being and living Between a burden and a boy There is research that helps us understand the newborn This is the research that concerns the living What is normal what isn't when it isn't why isn't it? What do we do about it? Can we treat it with what? How much Doctors working in the genetics laboratory study the chromosomes from a newborn Just one slight deviation in the genes and the baby is doomed to a life of mental inadequacy But watch the diet eliminate the offending amino acid change a life What if it's more than a chromosome off -balance Can it be determined before birth is there a way to surgically correct malfunctioning organs before arrival Yes, there may be a point in time when all children may be born whole and hail When routine prenatal tests reveal discrepancies that can be corrected even prior to birth Here at children's we look for answers a Fear is real the panic acute Relief is joyous Jimmy had two kidney transplants neither was successful But Jimmy keeps hoping and we keep working Children are born with heart disease others develop it Today treatment can restore health to many Arthritis is not confined to later years The world cannot always adjust to the child He must make his peace with himself Before he can take his place among others The brain damaged are not pariahs to be confined to snake pits or closets But what happens when you know the brain is damaged so severely he will never learn to walk Or when you know, it's a malignant non -operable tumor a Hospital is a place to learn The medical student realizes he still has lots to learn He must be shown guided inspired Something subtle and very wonderful transpires when physicians teach and students learn within the confines of a hospital There is an inherent need for the more penetrating look more careful appraisal They learn the difference between patient and case Between the sick child who is the person and the child who is merely host to the disease they learn for whom we care and the ways in which we care the ways of concern of involvement of respect for the youngster and empathy for the parent The resident must make a fast decision the hospital must respond The nurse must be taught she must be guided she must learn to assess She must want to care A hospital can be a happy place A wonderland A wonderland A place to grow and Think about what's next These then are for whom we care Yes more than 25 ,000 children in just one year For about one -third of them the care is given free Not free of love not free of concern Not free of despair Just free of cost Given free for only one reason They needed help The cost to the hospital is roughly one and a half million dollars Dollars that have to come from somewhere from people who care from people like you You
