Abstract
Shot between 1960 and 1962, this footage captures early construction of Chicago's Marina City, a high rise mixed-use complex on the Near North Side. Construction was completed in 1967.
Characterized by twin, 60-story, corncob-shaped high-rises, the residential, entertainment, retail and marina complex on the Chicago River between State and Dearborn streets is considered an icon of Chicago architecture and a model for urban renewal. It is also considered an exemplary example of Expressionist architecture, and represents Bertrand Goldberg’s unique architectural perspective as one of Chicago’s most notable architects.
Marina City was approved as an official City of Chicago Landmark District in 2016.
