Abstract
Observational footage of an autumn day on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.
Description
This footage shot in Madison, Wisconsin mostly captures students and faculty as they make their way around a small stretch of the UW-Madison campus near Langdon and N Park Streets. Landmarks seen include the Memorial Union Terrace on Lake Mendota, the Red Gym, Science Hall, Bascom Hill, Library Mall (where students practice their Monty Python "silly walks"), George L. Mosse Humanities Building, Wisconsin Historical Society, and the Wisconsin State Capitol building as viewed from the bottom of State Street.
The film was shot circa 1970, a time when Madison was a hotbed of counter-cultural activity, including protests against the Vietnam War. Notably, the film includes footage of two men tabling for the Madison Gay Liberation Front, distributing a 1969 article by Tom Burke titled "The New Homosexuality" as well as copies of a 1967 pamphlet titled "What About Homosexuality?" published by Social Progress: A Journal of Church and Society.
