Abstract
Home movie of Rhodes Patterson's wife, Norma, on a swing set juxtaposed with time lapse footage of cars driving on Michigan Avenue, boats crossing the Chicago River under the DuSable and Roosevelt bridges, and shots of Fullerton Beach.
Description
Film begins with ~ one minute of home movie footage (partially shot in fast-motion) of Rhodes Patterson's wife, Norma, swinging on a swing set. This cuts to partial fast-motion and regular speed time-lapse footage of cars entering and exiting a plein air parking lot and driving down Michigan Avenue by Water Tower Place. The Wendella Boat Ride signage is visible in shots of Michigan Avenue near the Chicago River, followed by fast-motion shots of pedestrians entering and exiting the Wrigley Building and crossing the DuSable Bridge. This footage cuts to a shipyard and loading dock for the Chicago Tribune on the Chicago River, followed by time-lapse footage of the DuSable Bridge raising for ships to pass underneath it. The bridge lowers, and pedestrian and car traffic resumes. Time-lapse footage of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Bridge raising to allow barges and ships to enter Lake Michigan; the bridge lowers, and traffic across the bridge resumes in fast-motion. This is followed by close-up, contrasting regular speed and fast-motion time-lapse footage of traffic crossing the FDR Bridge and of boats, barges, and yachts on the Chicago River and in Lake Michigan.
The second half of the film is home-movie style shots—in regular speed, fast-motion, and slow-motion—of a park with a water fountain and picnicking families, which cuts to similar-styled shots of pedestrians, beach-goers, and boats at Fullerton Beach. Navy Pier is visible in the background of many of these shots. The final ~ minute of this film is time-lapse, regular speed, and fast-motion shots of couples and groups in rowboats on a river and small lake.
