A work created for the 2022 CFA Media Mixer by artist Janelle Vaughn Dowell and musician Sen Morimoto.
Description
Description provided by the artists:
Inspired by the book Begin Again by Eddie Glaude, Jr., Elsewhere is a digital collage film with raw material drawn from the Chicago Film Archives collections. Videos assembled in this work are related to vacation, rejuvenation, nature, transportation, and abstract art. Music serves as the pulse and reflects on the fruit of rest. It shows relaxation as intentional, valuable, and worthy of our respect. According to Glaude, Elsewhere “affords anyone with a sacred freedom, even if momentarily” and it is that “physical or metaphorical place that affords the space to breathe, to refuse adjustment and accommodation to the demands of society, and to live apart, if just for a time, from the deadly assumptions that threaten to smother.” This film gives the exhausted permission to be still, set boundaries, and seek sanctuary without any ounce of guilt.
