Abstract
An early edit of an unfinished film about murals in Chicago. This short cut was made to submit with grant proposals to find further funding to complete the full film. The footage captures murals in the neighborhoods of Pilsen, Little Village, West Town, and Humboldt Park in the late 1980s.
Description
The unfinished film was spearheaded by Susan Dobinsky and Julia Kurtz and funded primarily through a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, and supported by filmmakers Ronn Bayly and Susan Regele's then Chicago-based company Lightbound, which was active from 1980-1990.
When the filmmakers began the project, their objective was to make a film about murals and how they construct and embody a means of communication within and outside of immigrant communities. As Dobinsky explained, “we turned to three disciplines as a theoretical framework of our project – art theory, anthropology and linguistics.” Their plan was to investigate the social and psychological aspects often embedded and reflected in murals, examining the corollaries that exist between the artistry of mural-making and language.
