If it was in any other direction, the odor was just terrific.

And people who lived in the patch, many of the women worked in that factory, including my mother.

The conditions there were filthy.

And the pay, of course, was very, very, very small, or just very, very little pay.

And yet it was considered a good job to have at the time.

I'm thinking of you in high school, Larry.

This is so...

We think of young, young, young, young, young blacks, young Puerto Rican people, that young, that young, young, young white students too.

The idea of the teacher saying to you, when you were just in the fine arts, you were just curious.

Yes.

When you take vocational work? Yes.

Yes.

As a matter of fact, I suspect that's a practice that goes on in many black schools, even today, are schools where there are large numbers of black children, that counselors, at least where there are still bigoted faculty and staff people.

The counselors at our high school always called in the Michigan City and Michigan City.

Yes.

The black youngsters just before they went in to senior high school and to discuss the course that they would take vocational academic, which was obviously the course for the elite.

I would always recommend that the black youngsters take the vocational course, the boys take the vocational course so that they would be able to work in a factory when they got out and that the girls take the home economics course so that they could cook in someone's kitchen.

I already call talking to my counselor and telling her that my father didn't want me to take the vocational course and of course he became extremely upset.

And finally, I had necessitated my father coming to the school to talk to her himself and in his course, imperfect English, he got to his point across that he did not want his son taking the vocational course because he thought that there were other things that he could do than work in a factory.

The most important thing about this, Alex, the other point, said your biological was pointing out to that strange moment.

This was happened with so many of the ones who wanted to, you know, the fact that then you went to Indiana University later on about Paris, so it was lost with your sister.

It's a good fact that there's something that Richard Hatcher has forgotten, he would come to the question of other kinds of black candidates, what candidates of all colors involved.

Insofar as they contributed, money is from the food, a pantry as a matter of fact, to help him with his expenses, both at Indiana University and in Valparaiso.

That again is a kind of cross section of the black experience, if you will, that black people in a sense constantly kind of extended family in this country in order to survive it.

They've been obliged to help each other and work with each other on projects like the matter of getting an education.

Some landowners got government farm subsidies on land they put to a variety of other uses.

The investigators checked out a sampling of nearly 1 ,000 farm owners in six states through the West and Midwest.

They found what they termed questionable subsidy payments of over half a million dollars.

Among the recipients were farmers putting their land as a chooses as garbage dumps, gravel pits and housing developments.

One farmer even had a nudist camp on land for which he was getting a farm subsidy from the government.

The subsidies were made and were a program of price supports paid to farmers who agreed not to plant certain crops, thereby helping to avoid crop surpluses that might adversely affect the market for those crops.

Tony Sargent, CBS News, Washington.

There is an increase in number of these.

He said he hoped to make new contacts with the Japanese consumer movement in order to widen his own consumer program.

According to Nader, as long as Japanese automobiles were kept out of the American market, there was no problem.

But once it was apparent the Japanese were making inroads on the American market, the U .S.

manufacturer decided it would be more profitable to tie up with the Japanese and thus have a stake in the increasing Japanese auto exports.

Nader cited such tie -ups as General Motors and Isuzu and Chrysler with Mitsubishi as evidence of this new trend.

He said the American Japanese auto industry is only one example of the danger of multinational organizations which transcend the needs of the consumer and become business nations without land.

He said their allegiance is profit and cost -motivated.

Well, Ralph Nader has won his fight to get government action concerning the safety of the Corver, the government has won 600 ,000 owners of the 1961 through 1969 Corver's to check for possible gas fumes leaking into the passenger compartment.

The Transportation Department's Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a consumer protection bulletin on the rear -engine car to alert owners to the risks of operating the heater.

This is Bob Eastman reporting for WVBM News Radio 78.

The new building is officially dedicated that I would like this building to be the building of the open door.

I would like the Republican Party to be the party of the open door.

A party with its doors open to all people of all races and of all parties.

Those who share our great ideals about the future of America and the future of the world.

In stressing the recruitment of all races, fates and ideologies, President Nixon was not striking new ground.

AIDS can't point to a...

I threw your heavy clothes on over there.

It made a floor to you.

Why? Why? The charm of a man he never lost is temper.

There were times when you know...

If it had been I, it would have gotten a little annoying.

But even though he seemed to come back with proposals that weren't what we thought they should be and there was annoyance, he'd smile and he'd say, you're excited, you've got a heart attack.

I think this is a stock in trade.

It's his ability to stay calm, cool, collected, happy, jovial, delightfully so.

And he goes back and forth all the time.

For doubt and patience.

New building is officially dedicated that I would like this building to be the building of the open doors.

I would like the Republican Party to be the party of the open doors.

A party with its doors open to all people of all races and of all parties.

Those who share our great ideals about the future of America and the future of the world.

The rock places with...

Dr.

Martin Luther King would probably never approve of what is going on now in his name.

Whose enchantile, Protestants and Catholics will be able to join hands and sing with the neat girls in the spiritual of all.

Free at last, free at last, thank God! I'm Burleigh Hattori.

We're bigger than the Republican Party.

There's all of America itself.

But our party will not grow unless it is the party of the open door, open to all people, all people who share our principles.

We want to work with us for the betterment of America and the betterment of the world.

People of Illinois, I will be in Springfield at any time if I can help the schoolchildren about...

No, I have any place.

Not only in Chicago, but you and I know that the real crying need of the schoolchildren of Illinois is in the inner city schools and there must be.

And there shall be.

And I know with the fine leadership in both houses and the new leadership, there will be a voice speaking louder than ever for these youngsters because we have to speak louder to give them the necessary assistance so that they might take their place in society.

On a vast one, 400 miles up river from Cairo, a dedication of the 360 foot high, a vast one damn, a major feat of engineering and planning, the first barrier to bring the world's longest river, the Nile, fully under control.

Ended now are the annual floods which used to devastate the desert land.

Instead there was a lake for them 300 miles long in water to provide an additional two million acres of arable land.

In a hungry nation where only 5 % of the land is fertile.

And there are 12 giant turbines to produce enormous amounts of electricity, more than twice as much as Egypt can use right now.

It will take another decade to complete the job of supplying all of Egypt's villages with electricity.

There are also hopes and plans to make use of some of that extra power in new aluminum and steel plants to be built as was the Aswan Dam with Russian aid.

It might have been otherwise the idea of the Aswan Dam was the dream project of the late President Messer.

When he became undisputed leader of the Egyptian back in 1954, he decided on this project to provide water for his parched nation as the best way to open the road to progress.

At the time, Messer had not developed his theories of neutralism and was in fact considered very pro -Western and he turned to the west to the United States, Britain and the World Bank for aid in financing and engineering the huge project.

It was an ambitious project for a nation still struggling for its recovered identity and not yet able to feed all of its people, but it was not an impossible project and the Western power is made an offer of aid and technical know -how.

But the atmosphere in the mid -50s was clouded by the specter of a communist monolith, he imagined or otherwise rising out from the walls of the Kremlin.

At the United States was preoccupied with a so -called policy of containment.

Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was trying to add Egypt to his anti -communist line -up and in particular to persuade Egypt and other Arab states to join Turkey and ancient enemy of the Arabs in the Baghdad back.

NASA resisted.

He began to obtain some arms from the Soviet Union and to play off the Russians against the West.

John Foster Dulles was angry and in July 56 an outfit Washington was withdrawing its offer of a loan for the S1 down.

The British and the World Bank followed suit.

Events moved quickly thereafter, NASA and revenge promptly nationalized the British dominated Suez Canal and the British, French and Israeli's alarmed what the war unwise because it turned out.

If there had been any doubt in NASA's mind before there was none now, not even after his attackers were persuaded to withdraw by pressure from the United States and Russia.

Russia, though upon promise financing of the S1 dam, and new arms for Egypt, work on the big dam was started in 1960 as a showpiece of socialist enterprise.

And so it stands today, formally dedicated on what would have been Gamel NASA's 53rd day.

And Russia's President Fagorni helped to cut the ribbons, not President Nixon or Prime Minister Heath.

And there were even some banners in S1 saying the Russians are our friends, the Americans are not.

The Russian and Superintendent Redmond, the Order of Education headed by President Jack Kerry and the Union headed by John Desmond and his associates have reached an agreement and the school situation in New York has been resolved in the interest of the school children of our city.

And I'm very thankful and grateful to the board members for their long hours of dedication and devotion to the Superintendent, to the President and also to the Union, Jen, Desmond and his membership for their interest in their consideration of the school children of Chicago.

I think this is another great occasion in our city where we can be happy.

Sighting in dramatically promising way, you, each of you 18 or older, has a voice in the future of America.

The whole history of the democracy in this country is a chronicle of the constant broadening of the power to participate.

Each new group receiving the franchise has had a beneficial effect in the course of America.

Each new group has given freshness and vitality to the purposes of government and now it's your turn to do the same.

The administration has no higher priority than in that world, but to end it in a way that we will have a lasting peace.

For one thing, I want to end it because this nation has a positive priority right here at home.

The young men and women now occupied it more could turn their hands to in peace.

Beyond this, I have some very personal reasons and I would like to end it.

Every week, as President of the United States, I write letters to the parents and the wives or even sometimes the children, a man who has given their lives with the adopt.

It's no comfort to me that when I came into office, I wrote 300 of those letters a week.

And at this week, I will write 27.

Asking that the Peace Corps, this year, a number of other agencies now scattered throughout the federal government be brought together into a new agency, a new volunteer service called, that will give young Americans an expanded opportunity for the service they want to give, and that will give them what they do not now have offered to them.

Attach the transfer between service abroad and service at home.

The Foreign Service, let us open the door to voluntary service.

And for those who want to serve but cannot devote their full time, the new Center for voluntary action will open new opportunities for millions of Americans of all ages to the extent they wish to contribute their time and their talents, their heart to building the community.
