Abstract
A home movie shot by Frank Miyamoto featuring auto racing in Milwaukee, a visit to Los Angeles, picnics around Chicago, and a family road trip to Champaign and Springfield, Illinois.
Description
After some scenes of a auto racing event at The Milwaukee Mile, the camera turns to Frank's sister Anna Marie Nakamura placing flowers at the graves of their parents, Joe and Yoshie Miyamoto, at Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles. This is followed by shots in a California backyard and at an airport. Next is a scene of a picnic in a park; two men toss a baseball, Frank's nephew Guy Nakamura mugs for the camera, and a group of women barbecue kebabs on a grill. At a different backyard picnic, men play catch, Frank's niece Gail Nakamura waves at the camera, a young man plays the trumpet, and Frank and a young woman film each other with their 8mm cameras. This is followed by shots of Gail's high school graduation.
The remainder of the film captures a road trip down Old Route 66 (I-55) from Chicago to Springfield, Illinois. Frank films the flat Illinois landscape from the backseat of the car; we catch glimpses of signs for the Illinois State Penitentiary in Statesville, Dwight, and the Great Champaign County Fair. Frank films Anna Marie, Guy, and Kathy Nakamura leaving a Courtesy Motel room and getting back into the car. The group makes a detour to visit the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus; Frank films the city's architecture, including Assembly Hall, Clark Women's Residence Hall, and the College of Fine & Applied Arts. Once in Springfield, the family visits the Illinois State Capitol and the Lincoln Home National Historic Site (where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1844-1861). Next they travel to Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site near Petersburg, Illinois (a reconstruction of the village where Lincoln spent his young adulthood), where they encounter some cows and donkeys. Kathy, Guy and their dad Mark Nakamura pose with a statue of Lincoln. They then visit Lincoln's tomb in Springfield. The remainder of the home movie captures the family's drive back to Chicago; they stop at a Horne's Restaurant, cross the Des Plaines River, and pass Chicago's Old Post Office, Buckingham Fountain, and One Prudential Plaza on their way home.
