Description
This advertisement shows time-lapse footage of the First Federal Rose.
In partnership with the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Chicago, the Jackson & Perkins Company developed the First Federal Rose over a nine-year period. In the spring of 1963, First Federal described the plant as, "a hardy, long-blooming hybrid tea rose," and began to offer it exclusively as a promotional gift to any customer who opened a 50-dollar savings account or added 50 dollars to an existing account.
During the first promotion in 1963, First Federal gave away 18,000 roses. Concurrent with Ott's advertisement in 1966, the bank gave away 26,000 roses, attracted 4,300 new accounts, and spent approximately $140,000 of its advertising and promotion budget on the First Federal Rose promotion, including $25,000 allocated toward its participation in the annual Chicago Flower and Garden Show at the McCormick Place exhibition hall.
