Wheat Farmer Neg.
Date Of Production
circa 1955
Abstract
An excerpt from the beginning of an episode of John Nash Ott's weekly television program How Does Your Garden Grow?, focusing on the history of wheat production and its marketing and transportation within the United States' Wheat Belt.
Description
This brief excerpt shows an unidentified man, likely either a local farmer or county agent, as he compares the quality of wheat samples from adjoining fields at an unspecified location within the United States' Wheat Belt.
In Ott's book, Health and Light: The Effects of Natural and Artificial Light on Man and Other Living Things, he recollects upon this scene: "In searching for a proper wheat field, the County Agent called our attention to two wheat fields on opposite sides of the road, both belonging to the same farmer. One field was outstanding, the wheat waist high, with large, full, firm heads. The other, badly infested with virus, was ankle high. The virus-ridden field had been replanted regularly to wheat for years without any crop rotation or application of fertilizer. Obviously, there was a nutritional deficiency in the soil and the County Agent explained how this lowered resistance and made the crop more susceptible to disease. What impressed me most was the uniformity of the virus throughout the field. There wasn't the slightest trace of virus in the healthy fields across the road."
