You a new Concept in the distribution and storage of anhydrous ammonia was put to work in Iowa this spring Key to the system is the g8x demountable container Specially designed easily transportable cylinder capacity 18 tons The truck with its special chassis supporting the now empty container heads back to the g8x terminal at Creston, Iowa To drop off that empty and pick up a full At Creston the containers are lined up on racks at the terminal siding and Hydras is pumped from the tank cars in traditional fashion there tradition stops G8x has designed these demountable containers as both a storage and a transport medium Transport for the trucker storage at the terminal the dealer location and a large farm The system allows for orderly and flexible handling of anhydrous at the terminal keeping the supply of filled containers ahead of dealer demand No long line of highway tank trailers waiting to be filled First job for the driver deposit the empty in the beginning haulers of anhydrous were skeptical But one short spring planting season provided the test for the system and answers for the drivers Well of them I've talked to seemed like it real well, I mean they don't have to handle the ammonia They never touch it we're in the other ways of moving ammonia why they gotta go out and unload it and take some two or three hours where they can go out there in 15 or 20 minutes and Unload it and be on their way home Not after we got started of course we had the tanks we set the tanks up out here and filled them up and Just backed under them took them out of course those guys went out with them the first few loads I mean show the driver what to do We've had drivers come in that's never even been around the thing at all All of that without any problems I Once the chassis is in position under the filled container on its rack the driver works a hydraulic device powered by the tractors air brake system The cylinders are up and seated When the container is high enough the steel supports are swiveled out of position Leaving the container in a raised position free of the rack and supported by the chassis alone This particular Outfit here had two drivers on this truck, and they was the ones that was mainly hauling 24 hours a day I Mean they'd be in here day and night just back and forth This has been our main Object to the whole thing I mean is the speed in delivering it If we can move a lot more ammonia this way than they can the other way I The old wind the guy's got to leave and then he's got a Go out there, and he's got a smaller pump.

It'll take him Two hours, I think depending on the size of pump sometimes up to three hours download a tank load So it's Speed is the main thing on the thing I mean the efficiency of it.

I mean it's gonna I Can't see why it can't be the coming thing At the dealer or distributor location the driver simply backs the full container into the rack The same type rack is at the terminal side You See now on these three rack setups where they can they've got two tanks there at all times when one gets empty why they can bring Bring the empty back and take another full out and see they can just keep rotating back and forth and keep it going They never run out And no necessity for the transfer of a full container Ammonia to the usual permanent storage tank no necessity for the often hazardous connection of liquid line and vapor line She's all printed on the back what the hell they go to All these other old tanks why you go to hook up something you got to stop and figure out now what valve is which that's Vapor if it's liquid These tells everything about it right on the back of the tank And once again the same procedure picking up the empty at the dealers and returning it to the Creston terminal for refilling and reuse And all it takes at the dealers is 10 to 15 minutes Well we've had real good experience with this system as far as time is Concerned we've been with all more ammonia with less hours If you figure that as as operational why it's probably been a 20 % increase in what? We could handle just from that or not happen to pump it twice The system is safe and the system is fast no problem Problems for the dealer the demountable container is his storage tank 18 tons of anhydrous ammonia ready for transfer But GATX went one step further providing a flexible and efficient extension of the system Allowing the dealer to service his satellite sites or his large farm customers At the farm site at two rack setup one container always in use One empty rack always ready to receive a full for the driver a carbon copy of the terminal and dealer drop -off For the farmer enough flexibility and capacity to stay ahead of the demand to keep his nurse tanks filled The GATX anhydrous ammonia container system is not just another piece of transport hardware But in effect a unit around which an entire distribution and marketing program can be developed For the producer shipper of anhydrous ammonia for the dealer and for the farmer There is no better way to move and store ammonia than the new GATX demountable container system And for the driver No, it's a good deal I sure think it uh they had it about ten years ago A lot of guys stuck with these old bulk tanks around the lot now You
