Abstract
Loosely assembled footage documents the following: Mayor Harold Washington endorses collective bargaining for the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians at a press conference held outside the Merchandise Mart concurrent with NABET’s June 1987 strike; NBC-TV anchor Carol Marin takes Washington’s place at the podium and provides moral support to NABET workers while fellow anchor Ron Magers stands beside her; William King’s 26-foot tall, 5-piece aluminum sculpture Solstice stands nearby the Lake Point Tower; the inaugural Thomas A. Dorsey Gospel Festival commences at the South Shore Country Club at 7059 South Shore Drive, and features a performance by the Thomas Tribute Choir, as well as appearances by Mayor Washington and Thomas A. Dorsey himself on June 15, 1985; Demonstrators congregate in the Kluczynski Federal Building Plaza to protest the U.S. government’s support for the El Salvadoran dictatorship and to call attention to Rev. Roy Bourgeois’ April 26, 1981 disappearance; Aerial footage captures the Chicago River dyed green for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations; A vessel passes underneath the drawn DuSable Bridge and shots capture the southwest bridgehouse’s relief sculpture Defense; Various televised news reports include an interview with Second Lady Joan Mondale; Brief shots present shock jock Steve Dahl in a variety of settings; A person wearing a lion suit stands beside John Henry’s aluminum sculpture Arris located at Congress Parkway between Dearborn Street and Plymouth Court; The Chicago Picasso stands in Daley Center Plaza; Various construction occurs on DePaul University’s campus and Stephen Luecking’s three-piece cement and wood sculpture St. Anne and Her Sentinels rests outside McGraw Hall; The Alexander Hamilton statue stands in Grant Park; Several shots taken from a boat on Lake Michigan show Navy Pier; Chicago Historical and Architectural Landmarks Commission member Ruth Moore Garbe attempts to break into the south end of Navy Pier with a pair of bolt cutters on March 24, 1985; Mayor Washington and Press Secretary Alton Miller confer outside the Merchandise Mart during NABET’s strike; Mayoral candidates Harold Washington, Richard M. Daley, and Jane Byrne engage in a debate moderated by John Callaway, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Chicago, and held at Roberto Clemente High School, 1147 N. Western Avenue on January 31, 1983.
