So friends all we're gonna celebrate now and leave here.

God bless you, pray for us, work for us, and we will celebrate on the night of April 4th.

I'm here with Jeff Kowalski from Gage Park who founded an anti -gang group.

Being one person like Jesse on every block in Chicago, there's nothing we can't do together.

These people and others like them come from many neighborhoods and backgrounds.

They're here as I am because we share a love for Chicago and a commitment to make it work for all its people.

And it's with that love and commitment that I...

I begin this campaign with pride in what I've accomplished and the fact that we've done it so it holds out the promise of easy answers.

It's simply not leveling with the people of Chicago.

And anyone who tries to divide our city will only set us back.

What Chicago needs from its mayor is a day in and day out determination to make a difference whenever and wherever we can.

That's my promise and that's my record.

We're fighting day by day, block by block, to ensure that Chicago continues to be a place where families can live and grow.

If this wasn't for going to Washington, D .C., you know, you can't be there for months.

You know, I mean, you have to be real careful about this idea that technology is here to stay.

And so that's what you have to do.

What is the most important thing? I read it on the...

It just becomes another job or you just can't see things out there in a community where you see...

If you cannot see it, you should get out of the job because you cannot do it.

You destroy yourself.

So how long do you see yourself staying? I really don't know.

May we bow our heads in prayer.

We gave you, we meaning the people of Chicago, gave you the greatest mayor this city has ever had, Harold Washington.

I am here to announce that I am a candidate for mayor of the city of Chicago.

Roll it with Rollie! That sound like election night when I lost.

And that I will run as an independent candidate in the April 4th general election.

Every room on November 10th, 1982 that Harold Washington announced his candidacy for mayor, he ran a good race and ladies and gentlemen, he won.

In the same spirit and tradition, I will run as hard and as fast and as successful as Harold did.

Now let's look at Chicago as it is now.

It is a city in which one in every seven persons live in poverty.

And I call upon daily immediately to cease and desist any further privatization until the proper assessment of its impact can be made.

What has the mayor himself done? Nothing except to institutionalize the demonization of Pershing Road and begin efforts to dismantle our system of public education.

That's what he's beginning to do.

We must prepare all of our children to ride the race into the 21st century on the information superhighway.

Since 1990, since Daily has been mayor, 4 ,432 people have been murdered in Chicago.

Is this Daily's fault? Well, maybe.

We'll let others figure out the answer to that.

But it is Daily's problem.

I don't expect the road ahead will be an easy one, but I am prepared for the bumps and I'm confident that I will arrive at my destination with your help and your support and your prayers.

I will ride at my destination victoriously.

Daley tours a shrimp processing facility; Daley marches in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade; Attorney General Roland Burris announces his candidacy for Mayor at the Ramada Inn on December 10, 1994; a helicopter and grounds crew install Fernando Botero’s 17-piece exhibition, “Botero in Chicago,” in Grant Park on April 24, 1994; maintenance staff mow the grass at Soldier Field; Czech artist David Cerny’s “Man Hanging Out” sculpture perches on top of the Columbia College building in August 2007; sculptor Dan Galemb speaks outside the Art Institute during the installation of two Chicago Bears helmets he designed for the Institute’s bronze lions in December 1985.
