This finished work begins with the following: baaa-ing sheep, sidewalk protests against British imperialism over Ireland, an excerpt of an interview with a Von Steuben Parade enthusiast, Governor James Thompson pauses on the sideline of a Columbus Day Parade to pose for a polaroid, a group of neo-nazis congregate in Marquette Park to display “White Power” banners, a cart-wheeler in a yak costume leads a marching band down the street, groups and couples relax by Lake Michigan, a group tours a battleship’s gun, a motorized chevrolet model closes its shell at an auto show, a “...Nature’s Mistake!” sign, a Looney Tunes “That’s All Folks!” sign stands in a window display, and an Air Force jet passes by a parade reviewing stand.
Now scored by B.J. Thomas’ “Jesus on My Mind,” the film continues with shots of a photographer’s backhead as he frames a marching band, a pair of pay phones, a “Give Eyes Right Here” sign, superhero characters as they pose next to a Superman float, an airplane as it flies over a Lake Michigan beach, police as they engage with parade activity, and war veterans as they gather around a watchfire ceremony.
The film concludes with a shot of the June 1, 1982 issue of Globe tabloid as it slowly sinks through a pool of water.
