They call Illinois flat.

The prairie lands.

But to the northwest, there is another land.

Toward the Mississippi, toward the Wisconsin foothills, there's a land as unspoiled as the frontier once was, and as rich and rolling as it was to the first explorers.

This is a land for new beginnings.

This is the Galena territory.

And this is the Galena territory.

It's a fair land, more than 6 ,500 acres of the fairest land in Illinois.

With masses of forests, great ridges, crusted with rock, deep gorges, hidden valleys, endless views of meadows and rangeland.

Open land, with streams and ponds and a lake, thriving with wildlife.

This is the Galena territory.

It's a land that looks much as it did a thousand years ago.

Primitive, timeless, and everlasting.

It's a land that looks as if no one has ever set foot here, and yet for hundreds of years, man has walked this fair land.

The Indians knew it and watched the rainfall on this earth.

Explorers knew it, and frontiersmen and miners and river boatmen and railroaders all knew its seasons.

Mark Twain did.

So did Lincoln and General Ulysses S.

The nation felt its imprint.

Here a nation grew to manhood.

And this is the Galena territory.

It's that part of a man that must move on.

It's that part that must roam and wander and go where none have gone before, beyond the communities, beyond the marked paths, beyond even his own limits, so he may find and set new ones.

Sponsored film made for the Branigar Organization, developers of The Galena Territory, a semi-private recreational, residential and resort community in the northwest part of Illinois. The film emphasizes the natural beauty of the land, contrasting the area's rolling hills with Illinois' reputation as being "flat" (the Galena Territory is located within the Driftless Region, characterized by its unique geological landscape that was spared from glacial flattening during the last ice age). The Branigar Organization began acquiring land for the formation of The Galena Territory in 1970.
