Thank you very much superintendent.

We're gathered here for two purposes this morning.

The first is to dedicate this bridge in honor of police officer William Peter Fahey who gave his life on February the 19th combating one of this country's greatest ills, the disease of the time.

During his nine years, police officer William Fahey received 21 honorable mentions.

Police superintendent Breezak and members of the police department and I have been meeting with citizens and community leaders in an effort to develop new programs designed to ensure the personal safety of residents throughout this city.

Today I would like to present the president of the city of Chicago, Mr.

We are extremely happy to have a fast growing commercial bridge.

I was watching from my office.

You see the sheet piling being driven for the fill.

We are now advertising the next one.

On a beautiful day you'll see forever.

Not just as the greatest new bridge in the United States or the largest.

I would like it to be remembered in a way that I did see it one evening and it was last February.

And I had been watching the progress of the bridge for a long time.

And if you all recall last February in the Chicago police department we had a very bad week.

We had three officers who were killed for the protection of citizens in this city.

And when you're mayor you are part of building a big bridge.

It reaches up to heaven.

Abstract

Footage of a ceremony held by the City of Chicago on October 18, 1982, as Mayor Jane Byrne dedicates the $33-million Columbus Drive Bascule Bridge in honor of police officer William P. Fahey, who was killed in the line of duty. Subsequent footage taken on October 31 includes the official opening of the bridge with a ribbon-cutting and balloon release, and documents Fahey’s widow Patricia as she drives the first automobile across the bridge with her children and Fahey’s parents. The film concludes with a marching band. Footage also includes Police Superintendent Richard Brzeczek.
