Abstract
Loosely assembled footage documents the installations and dedication ceremonies for Joan Miro’s sculpture Miro’s Chicago in Chicago’s Brunswick Plaza and Claes Oldenburg’s sculpture Batcolumn outside the Social Security Great Lakes Payment Center. Shots include public reactions in televised interviews regarding the sculpture costs; American Gunite Co. staff as they methodically work on installing Miro’s Chicago; Mayor Jane Byrne as she attempts to unveil Miro’s Chicago on a windy Monday April 20, 1981; an exhibit for Oldenburg’s lithographs, screenprints, and other two-dimensional works; an interview with Art Institute curator of 20th-century painting and sculpture A. James Speyer; a balloon release at the dedication ceremony for Batcolumn on April 14, 1977; televised footage of Ernie Banks as he comments upon his acceptance into the National Baseball Hall of Fame; a variety of lighthouse-themed shots including the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, the neon sign depicting Minot’s Ledge Light next to the tagline, “Home of Cohasset Punch,” above the former Ladner Brothers Tavern at 207 W. Madison Street, and the model lighthouse on top of the Salvation Army’s shuttered Harbor Light Center at 654 W. Madison Street; an interview with Oldenburg and his wife and collaborator Coosje van Bruggen. Footage also includes Chicago newspaper reporter and Mayor Byrne’s husband Jay McMullen, Mayor Michael Bilandic, Second Lady Joan Mondale, and deputy chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts Michael Straight.
