Abstract
Loosely assembled footage documents the “America for Jesus” rally in Chicago’s Grant Park on August 15, 1981, and the preceding “Washington for Jesus” rally held in Washington, D.C.’s National Mall on April 29-30, 1980. Shots include the following activities: Throngs of attendees descend on Grant Park and the National Mall; Attendees' signage advertises various states’ allegiance “for Jesus,” the Chicagoland Chapter’s “Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers,” “Cops for Christ,” “Jesus” t-shirts for sale at $5.71 plus tax, and “Separation of Church and State” by an American Atheist Virginia Chapter member; Members of the ad hoc coalition April Alliance, including Rev. David H. Eaton, Dr. Charles V. Bergstrom, and Anne B. Turpeau, attend a press conference on the morning of April 29, 1980 to champion the separation of church and state, and to question the “Washington for Jesus” rally organizers’ underlying intentions; Nancy Honeytree performs on stage at the youth concert held at Robert Kennedy Memorial Stadium on the evening of April 28; Christian evangelists and rally organizers Pat Robertson, Dr. Bill Bright, and Rev. John Gimenez promote the “Washington for Jesus” rally at a press conference in the afternoon of April 29; Christian evangelist Nicky Cruz speaks at the youth concert at Robert Kennedy Memorial Stadium on the evening of April 28.
