because of the events of the last few weeks, whether we agree or not with the policies of our national leaders, we certainly are deeply respectful and grateful for all of those who serve our country and who have served us well in these recent events.

The ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming, and the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, that our flag was still there, O say, does that star -spangled banner yet wave O say, does that star -spangled banner We would like to cry and wash away the memories and the baptism of tears that we might rise again to newness of life.

We would like to scream at what we see.

There are no ears.

We desperately crave peace.

There is continual warfare within and without, and more blood flows.

A dangling jaw, our souls bleed.

We cry to you for the healing to begin, for the healing of our memories, for the acceptance we so desperately crave, for the accounting...

...that war is not over for many who still are fighting to survive and live for themselves...

to say, I doubt that anybody could say with written words, spoken words, the feeling that should be here today any better than Archbishop Bernadine just did.

It is truly a way of saying thank you to not only the veterans of Vietnam, to the ones that did not return, to the ones that did return, but to all of the families, the closeness that the Archbishop described, of families destroyed, families hurt, and yet these men and women went to fight in an unpopular war.

I think traditionally we have always said thank you, and we in Chicago are attempting to what the rest of the country is attempting to do, and that is in a very humble way.

Repeat what this day is all about.

To those who gave their lives, we can never say thank you enough.

To the families who had to survive without, we can never say thank you enough.

But to those who have gone and returned, we can at least show you that we are grateful.

Thank you very much.

I have done my duty and demonstrated courage and dedication in the finest tradition of our country's military service.

On a fine day on a trail in Vietnam, that friendship came to an end.

He was shot in the chest.

Three days later we were told that he was dead.

We now would ask for a moment of silence.
