Abstract
Loosely assembled footage depicts the 1987 mayoral candidates Mayor Harold Washington, Jane Byrne, Cook County Assessor Thomas Hynes, Donald Haider, and Ald. Edward Vrdolyak as they deliver speeches, canvas throughout neighborhoods, and attend various campaign events. Shots include the following: The Johnny Holliday Orchestra performs onstage; Haider prepares to ride Dondi, a Shrine Circus elephant, across State Street on March 18, 1987; Ald. Richard Mell screams for someone to turn the music off; kids hold up pro-Hynes signage during the South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade celebrations; Hynes visits a tortilla factory; Byrne accosts shoppers inside a Latin grocery store; Washington and fiancee Mary Ella Smith exchange a kiss at a campaign event; Hynes asserts he has a “very good chance” at winning the election to surrounding press in a loop office building lobby; Washington shakes hands with supporters; photographer Paul Natkin positions himself under a large format camera’s dark cloth in Daley Center Plaza; Vrdolyak attends a baseball game; Washington poses with donors for a hired event photographer; Governor James Thompson shakes hands with supporters; Washington and Byrne ride in the downtown St. Patrick’s Day Parade; Chicago Sun-Times reporter Harry Golden, Jr. explains television as an effective means of advertisement for mediocre politicians; Washington engages a church’s congregation; Vrdolyak marches with the Alumni Association of Saint Joseph’s College in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade; Don Terry takes bets about the mayoral election’s outcome with Lynn Sweet and other reporting staff in March 1987; Washington and Byrne cast ballots at their respective polling sites; Washington aide Christopher Chandler provides an interview on a Chicago River bridge as the sun sets; columnist Jon-Henri Damski prepares to interview near the Alexander Hamilton statue in Lincoln Park while Bill Stamets expresses frustration behind the camera.
