Abstract
Loosely assembled footage depicts Olympic celebrations held in Chicago, May 1984.
Shots include the following: Mayor Harold Washington, Chief of Staff Bill Ware, a group of Greek Orthodox priests, and various other officials march along Michigan Avenue in the 18th Annual Greek American Parade on May 12, 1984; several guests including AT&T regional public relations manager, Frank French, Turner Industries Inc. engineer, Gilbert “Gil” Farnham, an unspecified representative of the mayor’s office of special events, and Olympian Willye White deliver speeches for the opening reception of photographer Walter Iooss, Jr.’s “Shooting for the Gold” exhibit held at the Museum of Science and Industry; Farnham stands at the foot of the museum while detailing Turner Industries Inc.’s manufacture of the “official olympic runner’s torch”; the Olympic torch relay, shot animatedly on foot and from the flatbed of a media truck, proceeds along N. Michigan Avenue and into the Lincoln Park neighborhood; Mayor Harold Washington delivers a speech at a CityArts celebration, and WWI veteran Joe Ambrose attends the event on his birthday, May 24, 1984.
