They noticed that The to evil and The sad occurrence of starving people is apparent in cities worldwide.

According to studies by the United Nations, 15 to 20 million people die from hunger each year, or 41 ,000 people per day, or 28 every minute.

And the unfortunate part of that is 21 of those 28 are children.

Today we are here to join people all over the world in pledging to do what we can about hunger worldwide.

Here in Chicago, we are committed to doing everything we can to alleviate this plight.

We have called upon you, as we usually do, the leaders of our communities and the workers of not -for -profit organizations to join us in our crusade to feed those in need in Chicago.

You are in the communities.

You know where the needs are, and we are asking you to lend your expertise and support so that this holiday sharing it program can make a real difference in people's lives.

Our holiday season this year will serve a higher purpose because Chicago will celebrate this joyous season by sharing with others.

We are very pleased that the Chicago Sun -Times is co -sponsoring the Sharing It program again this year, and that Taubman Federal Saving will also join us again by making all of their 55 city and suburban offices food collection stations.

Last year, this program raised over $200 ,000 and many, many tons of food.

This year, food and money will not be distributed until the city has determined the areas of greatest need.

There are too many hungry people in this city and not enough food to help them.

When the Task Force on Hunger releases this report, we will study it and distribute the food where it is needed most.

We are asking you to make a commitment to hungry people of your community.

This is everyone's chance to be innovative.

Your business or organization or church can plan a food drive.

Anyone who wants to give will be well received.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our chairpersons for this year's program.

They all have made special commitments to this program, and we are grateful for their participation.

They are Robert Page, president and publisher of the Chicago Sun -Times, Jacoby Dickens, chairman of the Seaway National Bank, Leonard Koval, Michigan Avenue Management Corporation, and Margaret Sethness, honorary counsel general of Nepal.

On behalf of the people of the city of Chicago, I express my gratitude to them.

And now, Lois Weisberg of our office of special events will tell you more about the exciting events we are planning in conjunction with the Sharing It program for this season.

I want to thank all of you for coming here today to help launch the second year of the Sharing It Holiday Festival.

There are many faces here from last year and many new faces, and that's the way to make this program a success.

I want to acknowledge a few of the people who are here today that have also joined in to help us.

John Trotter and Mr.

Bill Sharp of Illinois Bell, who are helping to sponsor this program, and in particular the Folk Fair, which is this coming weekend.

I'll lead a few words about the holiday events that will be focal points for the collection of food and money this year.

We have materials here, and they're all explained in our press releases.

The first very important event we have is this weekend, which is the 25th anniversary of Chicago's International Folk Fair.

This is the very nice part of it.

Loosely assembled footage depicts the following: Mayor Harold Washington and director of the Mayor’s Office of Special Events Lois Weisberg promote events planned in conjunction with Chicago’s “Sharing It Holiday” during a press conference at City Hall in October 1984; the 25th Annual Chicago International Folk Fair presents a variety of handmade arts and crafts at Donnelley Hall, 411 East 23rd Street on October 20-21, 1984; The Day of the Dragon daylong festival hosts a kite fly in Grant Park, a lion dance on the steps of the Field Museum, and a fireworks show on August 12, 1984; the 11th Annual Fiesta Del Sol held in the Pilsen neighborhood features food, art, music, and the Mexican aerial ballet troupe, Los Voladores, on August 10-12, 1984.
