Abstract
This film is about circles. The first circular object on screen is a roll of film, the following is an orange, and thereafter, Byron’s film is a journey through all things circular. At one point, the camera itself is spun in circles, which presents a unique camera angle for the viewer.
Circles was created during Byron’s studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He was placed under the special guidance of photography teachers, Frank Barsotti and Ken Josephson. They instructed him to shoot around visual themes and this is one of the results. Circles is Byron’s early attempt at editing live action in order to create a formal, music-like structure. His future wife, Martha Glennon, makes her first appearance in this film.
