You The Trip along the corridor to the operating room may be terrifying Particularly to a child who has no idea about what is going to happen For a number of years we had children's Memorial Hospital have been preparing children for cardiac catheterization And various surgical procedures with the use of puppets and models of the equipment that the child will encounter This program is operated by volunteers who are trained in a variety of techniques designed to coincide as closely as possible With the experience a particular child will undergo Hi, Amy, hi, how are you today? I'm the puppet lady.

You know why they call me that I have a whole cart full of puppets But I want to go over with you about your operation tomorrow Tomorrow tomorrow let's play today about tomorrow Hi, happy you're a little girl puppet Dead night down we put her on your hand, but do you write with this hand or do you write with this? Okay, can you put your thumb out here And your pinkie, where's the pinky? Okay Well, let's put any finger we can find out there can you say hi to me now it's the puppet let's see I'm the nurse.

Hi, Amy How are you doing? Okay, good tomorrow.

The nurse is going to come in and say good morning.

Amy.

How are you feeling? You feeling fine this morning Today is a special day because you're going to have your heart surgery today And I'm gonna take off that hospital down that you have on Nice rubber dub rubber dub bed there I'm going to put you in this clean fresh white hospital gown Tie it around your neck and she's gonna say Amy this morning.

I'm not going to give you any Breakfast no breakfast this morning.

No breakfast not any No Yeah, when they're ready for you in the operating room don't crawl down and say already for Amy And the nurse will come in And she'll say okay Amy, will you flip over on your bed now? This isn't a real shot.

It's just a pretend shot, okay? And the nurse will say you flip over Amy And she'll take this kind of smelly alcohol pad She'll clean you off And she'll give you a little shot That wasn't bad was it no just pinch us for a minute now this shot is going to make Amy feel sleepy Sleepy and a little bit thirsty But you're not gonna have any breakfast and you're not going to have anything to drink until it's all over okay Okay There's Amy lying in bed feeling kind of sleepy and in comes the nurse Who looks like this have you seen any nurses that look like this around the hospital? She's our surgery nurse She has a white mask and a white gauze cap She's gonna come in with a rolling cart to take you down to surgery She pushes the card in next to your bed She takes Amy Puts you on the cart and you roll down the hall Then you say hi mom bye dad and they'll wait for you in the waiting room right down the hall from where you're going to be Okay Down the hall and outside the operating room you might have to wait there for a minute or two you won't worry will you? Now as soon as they're ready for you In the operating room Roll Amy in And up onto the operating table This table isn't like your bed is it it's hard and black right right? And they're gonna be ten doctors and nurses just for you in that operating room look like this Those are for me Well, we're gonna use those for now and the doctor has a mask over his nose He looks a little scary doesn't he but underneath that mask what's he doing? smiling yes And those doctors and nurses are all there to make you better After you're up on the operating table Look up and you're gonna see great big bright light overhead and that's how the doctors and nurses can see very carefully what's going on Now when they're ready for you to go to sleep the nurse will take a mask It looks like this and she's gonna say okay Amy.

She's gonna put it over your mouth And over your nose and say I want you to breathe deeply can you go like this And inside of two or three minutes you're going to be sound asleep Sound asleep This Amy this Amy's going to be sound asleep Now when you wake up You're going to be in a different room, and you won't even remember having gotten there And that room You called Intensive care you know why they call it that because they give you the most special care there of any place in the hospital Yes, here's a baby who just had heart surgery Can we talk a little bit about what that room is going to be like? But the baby's gonna tell nurse right right here's the nurse And she's saying hi Amy.

How are you feeling a little groggy a little groggy Inside this tent it's going to be a little foggy A little damp and a little cool and the reason that you're going to be in this tent is it makes it very easy to breathe Very easy to breathe in this tent, but not me I'm not going to go in here now tomorrow Tomorrow I can come on right and at the foot of the bed is a machine It looks like a television set look at that and that's called a monitor And that registers your heartbeat little red lines going up and down and you're going to hear those machines And you know what they sound like like this beep beep beep beep beep And Amy we talked about you didn't have any breakfast remember no breakfast And you're still not going to feel like eating for a little while So we have what we call IV which is like a liquid food And there's going to be one attached To your arm One attached to your leg And that's so you won't have to eat for a few days until you feel a little bit more like eating okay, okay And you're going to have a little bandage Over your chest where the surgery has been okay and coming from under the bandage Is what we call a drainage tube and then earth will take care of that Now Mommy and daddy won't be able to spend quite as long with you tomorrow as they have up till now you're going to see them For about oh ten or fifteen minutes every couple of hours, okay? That's because you want to get lots and lots of sleep because you're going to feel tired My mom's gonna take me right right My mom gonna take me her mommy will be waiting in the waiting room during the operation and then afterwards when you're in this room She'll come and see you about ten or fifteen minutes every two hours Well probably some of the time when she comes in to see me you'll be slipping Don't you think because we want you to get lots of sleep two five I'm gonna be here for Three weeks right oh, I hope it won't be that long.

I don't think it'll be as long as three weeks We'll be in this we'll be up in this special part of the hospital about two or three days And then when the nurse decides you're just fine to go back to your own room.

She'll move you right back to your very own room Now do you have any questions you want to ask me about what we've talked about no questions And I can back and see you next week in your own room when you're back in your own room you you
