No books printing writing no ideas no past no future They're all here in the power of paper There will always be paper because there will always be trees our most important resource grows Renews and replaces itself forever Paper begins with trees with their wood with the cellulose fibers that build wood From farms where trees are grown and harvested just to make paper from lumber mills wood chips These are the major sources for the raw material from which paper is made In the deep hidden microscopic world within wood we see the building blocks Chains of tree cells whose woody walls give both trees and paper their structure and strength We free the fibers from their woody prison and rebuild them into paper Pine trees have long fibers they give paper its strength Hardwood leaf bearing trees have short fibers that give paper its smoothness and beauty By mixing fibers in various proportions adding chemicals using different machines We build fibers into paper in amazing variety Some champion paper mills receive their wood in carloads of five -foot logs At one mill giant machines handle whole tree lengths and buzzing saws cut them to size By water -filled flumes and mechanical conveyors logs travel to turning drums Inside the tumbling logs strip each other of their bark since bark cannot be used to make paper But the bark is not wasted it can be burned for energy to power the mill or used for mulch and gardening products cleaned of their bark Logs journey on to the chipper where whirling blades chew them into postage stamp sized chips that are screened for uniformity Chips are blown into mountains Ample storage to feed the mills machines and keep them running From trees to logs from logs to chips The next step breaks wood down some more freeing its fibers for making pulp and then paper Inside the digester steam pressure and powerful chemicals called the cooking liquor pressure cook the wood chips Cooking and chemicals separate the individual wood fibers from the things that once held the wood together lignin resins saps and turpentine Like the bark spent cooking chemicals are not wasted first.
