Abstract
The original, edited footage for Elam's dual projection film "Back Yard." The first half was made into the print "Back Yard (right)" and the second half "Back Yard (left)." These would have, presumably, been projected simultaneously side by side.
Elam documents the everyday happenings in and around her Chicago backyard. Seasons come and go, trash is collected, a woman hangs laundry, a dog sniffs its way through the alley. Elam imbues each section with a rhythm that comes together in an entrancing way when viewed side-by-side. Back Yard is one of several dual projection films Elam made, clearly a format that held great interest for her.
