You've heard of Stanley Arnold.

He's been campaigning actively and we don't know much about Mr.

Smothers candidacy.

That doesn't mean it's not serious.

Apparently it is.

He's got 50 signatures at least from three states to get on the list.

Franklin McMahon of Lake Forest, Illinois calls himself an artist reporter.

Not a bad name for it.

He's been documenting this 1972 political season in watercolors and he's been recording this convention scene out there, which is made for watercolors, I would suggest.

Now with some of McMahon's paintings, a report from our CBS News correspondent, Charles Osgood.

Stepping from the sticky Florida heat into a cool but crowded hotel lobby.

Decor, Miami Beach, Neo -Versailles.

Passing a cheaper hotel on the beach where the warm July breeze when there is a breeze is all the air conditioning there is.

Here, some welfare rights non -delegates.

And the campers out.

You'd see them making a kind of hotel out of Flamingo Park.

Grant Park is only in another city, but it seems now it's from another age, another world.

Here they used a tree for a roof, made bedrooms out of cars and trucks.

Made offices out of tents.

Unlike the candidates who are installed in the Big Plush Resort hotels, artist McMahon calls this painting, Prairie Populist in the Pleasure Palace of Kubla Khan.

You could ride along Collins Avenue and even at odd hours see delegates caucusing in some of the upstairs suites.

The candidates came in over the weekend.

This was the arrival area at Miami International Airport on Saturday when George Wallace was lifted from a hospital plane and wheeled up to the rostrum.

What had happened to George Wallace in Maryland and the other tragic history of recent years made Miami Beach security conscious.

Secret service men are everywhere and the police too.

Not obtrusive, but they are there.

Inside the hall, the old and new politics, the old and new people came together.

MediaFest 1972.

More newsmen here than delegates.

And in just about every press room in this convention hall, a television set.

The camera eyes looked down at the rostrum and floor from high ground, specially constructed.

The balloon amats were all over town.

This was Monday.

Now all the balloons have popped, but one.
