Telenews footage of Maria Meneghini Callas' performance at the Civic Opera house on January 22, 1958, as well as the aftermath of a building fire near the intersection of S. Lake Park Ave and S. Greenwood Ave, likely on the day after the performance.
This Telenews footage begins with a shot of attendees as they pour through the doors of the Civic Opera House in Chicago on January 22, 1958. This cuts to a scene inside the dressing room where opera singer Maria Callas prepares for her performance at a benefit concert for the Alliance Francaise, and her husband Giovanni Battista Meneghini sits nearby. Three photographers emerge at the threshold with cameras poised, and then Callas walks on stage where she joins hands with the evening's guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Nicolo Rescigno, and receives applause from a sell-out crowd of 3,800.
The film concludes with footage of the remnants of a fire near the intersection of S. Lake Park Ave and S. Greenwood Ave, which is likely a fire that occurred at 4211-13 S. Lake Park Ave the day after Callas' performance at the Civic Opera House. Shots display bystanders, emergency responders, and remnants of the building laden with icicles.
Seven children died in the 4211-13 S. Lake Park Ave fire, and numerous fires which occurred in January 1958 on the south side of Chicago were attributed to inadequate maintenance of the tenements by their owners.
