Abstract
Silent Telenews newsreel covering the December 1, 1958 fire at Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago. It was the third deadliest school fire in U.S. history, killing 92 students and 3 nuns. The tragedy led to major improvements in standards for school design and fire safety codes.
Description
Exterior footage of firefighters climbing ladders on the side of Our Lady of the Angels School at 909 North Avers Avenue in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood. Smoke pours from broken windows as firefighters carry covered bodies into emergency vehicles on stretchers. A group of students looks on. Water gushes out of the building.
Next are scenes at a crowded hospital (possibly St. Anne's Hospital). Grief-stricken parents cry in the corridors as nurses tend to the children. The film ends with nighttime footage of the school, followed by a shot of people praying in a church.
