Abstract
News footage captures police and firefighters' response to a fire at 1434 S. St. Louis Ave on March 5, 1980, near the conclusion of the 23-day firemen's strike.
Description
The film's opening shows police and fire personnel gathered outside in response to a fire that began on the second floor of a three-story apartment building at 1434 S. St. Louis Ave on March 5, 1980. Several personnel attempt to provide mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to two victims on the front porch, and Police Captain Edward Dwyer radios impatiently for a fire ambulance. A police squadrol arrives instead, and personnel, including Chief Joseph Murray of the 15th Fire Battalion, carry the victims past horrified bystanders and load them into the vehicle.
After the squadrol departs, WLS-TV Channel 7 reporter Rosemarie Gulley asks Hillary Richardson, the grandfather of the three victims, for their names: Robert, Robin, and Woodson Long. The film concludes as fire personnel work to contain the fire, and also drag smoldering furniture to the curb, including the remains of a mattress.
Authorities concluded that the fire began in a mattress in the Longs' apartment. Two-year-old Robert and three-year-old Robin died in the fire, and 16-year-old Woodson survived with critical injuries.
