I can well recall sitting in the office in 1970s named the Bicentennial Party, and we certainly have carried out his wish.

And all who have made a truly lasting positive mark on the world.

Here in Chicago, Mayor Richard Daly truly made a lasting mark on our city.

A mark recognized by leaders throughout the world on world affairs.

Today we dedicate this beautiful plaza in his honor.

We are here to dedicate the Richard J.

Daly Bicentennial Plaza.

Richard Daly was first elected mayor of Chicago on April 5th, the ninth strides in its history because one man, Mayor Richard J.

Daly was able to bring together the diverse elements of business and labor, the neighborhoods, the people and ethnic backgrounds, and he supplied the vital motive.

The plaque just above us, which you will see in a few minutes, tells us the story.

This plaza is dedicated to the memory of Mayor Richard J.

Daly, a staunch supporter of recreational and cultural facilities for all of the people of Chicago.

We need only look around us at the beautiful sky to see the works, the projects that were brought to fruition under his dynamic leadership.

Until 1973, this area we dedicate today was an unsightly open parking lot with relatively limited space.

On September 15, 1973, we have been able to do this right on the door of the world's most beautiful lakefront, while other cities defile their waterfronts with commercial and industrial ugliness, barely as much as Buckingham Mountain and the city skyline.

In place of an unsightly lot, we now have this beautiful landscaping, skating rink, ice picnic area, tennis courts, a place to stroll and to enjoy the view of the beach.

Inside the building are river rooms, lounges, and a swimming pool.

Working cooperatively to ensure the continued growth and development of all that was good for Chicago.

I am pleased today.

And I personally love, respected, and admire.

It's now my pleasure to introduce the Mayor of the city, Dr.

Dr His family, his church, and his city.

And not in any particular order.

Just about all three things the same.

And so I think we're here to dedicate this park to his memory.

A park whose principles are the same.

A park where families can come, be together.

A park where you can remember always his beautiful city.

And with the blessings of his eminence the cardinal, a park dedicated to the principles that the late mayor stood for, endowed in all of us, it is indeed a privilege for me also, on behalf of all the citizens and city of Chicago, to say thank you both to his family and to himself.

Daly said, he even took care of the weather today.

Thank you, Mayor.

And no happy occasion such as this would be completely without some meditating.

...children, the day of the election, the great deal of inspiration given to all.

My daughter, Katie, who is here, is dedicated to our family, my mother, Christian, and my brothers, President O'Malley, Richard, my mother, Bill, Lady, and Grace.

What my father's commitment was to make this city a great place to live, work, and raise our families, to offer to the people of the city of Chicago the choice and opportunity of recreation by our water -reaching facilities.

This heart continues that commitment to opportunity, to choice, to the people of this great city.

In many ways, the spirit of Richard J.

Davis is reflected in this beautiful park.

It is a family park for all the people of all ages.

If you look around this great park, you can see a great setting for the younger children in the playground.

For the tennis players of all ages and abilities, and the 12 beautiful courts, to the joggers and to the walkers, and not even the roller skiers, we have a beautiful view of this island.

Description

Opening footage shows Patrick O’Malley, President of the Board of Commissioners of the Chicago Park District, as he gives a public speech at a podium commemorating former Mayor Richard J. Daley’s life and introduces the surrounding Richard J. Daley Bicentennial Plaza. Subsequent speakers include WLS-TV’s Fahey Flynn and Mayor Jane Byrne. Eleanor Daley is also in attendance. The commemoration transitions to provided entertainment which includes two unidentified young women performing an Irish jig, and shots briefly capture the plaza’s newly installed playground and tennis courts. The film concludes with an excerpt of a speech provided by the deceased mayor’s son, Richard M. Daley.
