Abstract
Elements from a news segment capturing the Chicago Blackhawks facing off against Sesame Street muppets for their 1975 Christmas party at Chicago Stadium.
Description
The first half of this reel consists of only an audio track. The voice of ABC News announcer Greg Dobbs can be heard describing the play-by-play action of the match in a faux-serious tone. He announces that Cookie Monster will be serving as goalie, and describes a faceoff between Oscar the Grouch and Blackhawk Bill White. Dobbs describes Big Bird going in for the puck, only to be quickly circumvented by the Blackhawks, both teams doing their best to go in for the goal as the stoic announcer continues to breathlessly recount the scene.
The second half of the film contains both image and diegetic sound from the rink. The scene that Dobbs had described plays out visually; we can now see that Dobbs has repeatedly attributed Grover’s puck handling skills to Oscar the Grouch.
Bert, Ernie, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Grover represent Sesame Street's team. On the Blackhawks side, the players shown include Bill White, Alain Daigle, Ivan Boldirev, Tony Esposito, Darcy Rota, Pat Stapleton, Gerry Pinder and Ray McCray.
Note:
The first half of this reel consists of empty leader and an audio track, and the second half contains the image and diegetic noise from the rink. This accounts for the separation of audio and image in this clip, which is presented here in its original version as it is constructed on the reel. The audio from the first half does sync with the image from the second half.
