I'm very excited about the opportunity.

It didn't take me very long to make up my mind.

It's a great thrill to return to South Bend and especially to the university as the capacity of head football coach.

And I certainly hope that everything will go along real well and that I will be here for many years to come and give Notre Dame a really fine football team which they have had over many, many years.

Joe, do you plan to make any changes in the coaching staff? Would you bring in your own staff? At the present time I have an open mind.

I certainly intend to interview each and every coach on the present staff.

I have many coaches that I have been friendly with throughout the country that I wish to speak with relative to the position of assistant in one or two capacities.

And I do not believe at this time that I will make up my mind on any assistant coach before the 10th of January.

Joe, what do you think Notre Dame football team needs most right now? That's difficult for me to say.

Notre Dame had a real fine football team last fall.

I saw them play on television.

I saw several of their films of various games.

They had a great football team in my opinion.

Unfortunately they didn't win a great number of games.

They won six and lost four, but it was an extremely great record against top flight opponents.

The personnel I am quite familiar with, boys like Mack and Crotty and Doyle and Stickles and Aizou and Adamson and Sable, those boys are really fine football players.

We certainly hope that the freshmen coming up will add to this fine group and really have a real hustling fighting football team for Notre Dame in the best Notre Dame tradition.

Joe, have you been brought back to Notre Dame to produce winning football teams? No, I do not.

I have no feeling along those lines.

I just want to say that it's a great opportunity for me to come back to Notre Dame in the capacity of head football coach.

I'm extremely happy about it and I do hope that I live up to the trust that the officials here at the University have placed in me.
