Well, because I feel that it's very important that people will have a chance to know the wife of the candidate and a little more about the family, and get to know the senator this way, so that they know him as a whole person, and perhaps realize that some of the legislation and his ideals and politics are based on reality.
And well, actually I think the getting acquainted with the candidate's wife is most important.
I think it's very important too.
But are you particularly anxious to get him in the White House? That seems to be your reason.
Well, I'd like to see him be present.
I haven't thought much about our getting to the White House.

Actually, the growth of my coming into Wisconsin started because I had come with the senator last fall and done some campaigning with him.
And then we decided that perhaps it would be a good thing for me to go around the state, various parts of it, to help get people acquainted with him and why I'm campaigning for him.
So that, and while he's in the Senate, that I could be here and this way we could be real partnership, partnership in sort of using our time to the best advantage.
I must say with all of the press that it's a little self -conscious and sticky today.
I do feel so much at home with you people, this group.

The first night that we were there, we went into a guy was saying that he can afford, and he's a bachelor, and one suit cost him a month and a half, and they don't buy a lot of clothing.
The children, however, are very well dressed, excellently dressed, and warmly dressed, and very much so.
I feel that you were experienced in being able to talk to Mr.
Kroosdorf the way he did.
They always make the comments that Humphrey talks so long, no wonder it took him eight and a half hours to talk to Kroosdorf.
But actually, and he took notes, and Sen.
did most of the questioning, and Mr.
Kroosdorf did most of the talking.
I think after seeing him here in this country, you would realize that that's more true than when we first came back.
Everybody thought that Humphrey did all the talking.
But they had a spirit and a very interesting conversation.

I think our meeting, our group getting together here has gotten a little formalized.
It's all misunderstanding.
I guarantee you I am not making a speech.
But with everyone gathered around and sitting quietly, you know it's almost a Humphrey trick or a habit that once the dinner forks rattle, it doesn't take a hat anymore.
You just start making a speech.
So the reason that we are here is for you folks to get better acquainted with me and through getting better acquainted with me, get to know my husband, Sen.

And I have had the good fortune to have so many good friends in Wisconsin who felt that as long as Hubert Humphrey had to be a senator, as well as a candidate this year, that he could perhaps share me with you folks as well as the family.
And this way I become kind of a split personality.
The story background of all the lights and cameras and everything is that this is more or less a first.
And I know the people in Wisconsin love to be first with things.
Minnesota people I think are going to be a little jealous.

In these 23 years of exciting and happy years with Hubert, especially the last 11 years in Washington as Senator's wife, it's been an adventure and discovery with him in a new world.
In each person and in all the people we have come to know together.
Now if Nancy or the boys were here to speak of their father, I think they would tell you what they have learned from him.
What loyalty to a principal means, what courage is, and how a sense of humor that helps one laugh at oneself confirm even the fragile poise of youth.
In a recent article about Hubert I found this quotation which I think typifies him as well as one can in a few words.
No one else in the Senate, for that matter few others anywhere in American politics, is quite so intensely fascinated with so many things about this earth as he.
Being a rather dedicated person myself, I feel that the part I play in Hubert's life, giving him a free go -ahead towards accomplishing the ideals and goals that we truly seek in this world, is my best way to help.
This is what I am doing here with you people.
Through him I too can feel I've added to a better world.
Togetherness, yes.
And a team, yes.
We share our abilities for the greatest good.
This I felt typifies my part in his campaign this year.
It stemmed way back last year, long before we knew how involved in things that, and even whether we, long before we knew that we would be a primary candidate running for the office in the state of Wisconsin.
Our neighbor state, and you know it truly was a neighbor state this morning.
We had coffee with the most wonderful group of Scandinavian friends, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, and shared their coffee cakes and, anything you want to ask I'd be glad to answer.

Other 15 year old, he's making new friends at this time and so forth, and I like to be very much in touch with him, knowing just what's going on and sort of guiding that boy.
That's a very essential time for mother and dad to be close with him.
But you know when I'm away this time, now...
