Mister Freeman, what material is this armor plate made out of? This is a material that has been developed by our company of a very especially compounded fiberglass reinforced plastic.

And how much does it weigh? The entire suit, including this upper body shield, these lower leg pieces, and all of the appended hardware that you see, weighs approximately 60 pounds.

So that means that the person wearing it will have a great deal of mobility.

That's quite correct.

That was one of our design objectives.

Are you all set to get inside of the armor suit now? Yes, I am.

Are you nervous? No, this actually has evolved after a rather long and comprehensive series of prior tests.

Well, it isn't as if it's been the first time.

But as we predicted, the transmitted loads to the body were relatively small and well able to be absorbed by patrolmen of even moderate size, I would say.

Were you able to feel any shock from this shot? I think I'd be safe in saying you knew that you were being shot at, but certainly nothing that would transcend the shock that the body takes in normal day -to -day activity.

Commissioner Piggins, I wonder if you can tell me what use will you put this type of armor to in the Detroit police force? Well, the primary purpose of it, of course, is to protect the officer under gunfire.

In the past number of years we've had, eight or nine officers have been killed who might today be living had they had such a protection as this.

Will this be used in special cases? Yes, it will.

This idea was devised about 20 months ago after we had an officer shot by a crazed gunman in a barricaded house.

And this is the very type of thing we'll use in instances like that as well as others.
