Abstract
Negative trims capturing the scenes of downtown Chicago during the 1960 Republican National Convention.
Description
Nixon supporters (mostly women) march on the Michigan Avenue Bridge carrying signs that say "G.O.P. The Best for Me," "Young Republicans Spirit of the 60s," and "Young America Goes G.O.P." The Chicago flag waves in the wind. A young man watches skeptically.
Next, scenes from a GOP parade on Michigan Ave., complete with motorcycles and a marching band. A woman walks in the parade with a live elephant wearing a headpiece. An Abraham Lincoln impersonator waves from a convertible. Two boys carry a banner that says "HOT - STUFF - GOP" and are followed by a group with a sign that says "New Trier Young Republican." An elaborate float with sled dogs. A young boy on the sidelines cries. The Stockyard Kilty Band is followed by a float with a large papier-mache elephant. A woman on a tropical-themed float throws a lei to the camera operator. Men dressed as clowns play musical instruments.
A group with "Draft Rockefeller" signs marches up the sidewalk carrying kites. A boy holds a sign that says "Democrats for Rockefeller." They stop at Grant Park to fly the kites, which have been plastered in pro-Rockefeller stickers. Many of the women have "PETTICOAT POLITICOS FOR ROCKEFELLER" sewn on their skirts.
