Abstract
Highlights from the 1956 Democratic Convention, held in the International Amphitheatre on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois August 13–August 17, 1956. Adlai Stevenson II, former governor of Illinois, is chosen as the nominee.
Description
After a number of long shots of the crowded International Amphitheatre, Alabama and California assign their delegates during roll call. With Pennsylvania's delegates, Adlai Stevenson is "put over the top" and becomes the Democratic nominee for president. Unsuccessful candidates for the nomination include Governor W. Averell Harriman of New York, Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas, and Senator Stuart Symington of Missouri.
Stevenson addresses the supportive crowd, announcing his unorthodox decision to leave the selection of his running mate up to the convention delegates. Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley can be seen seated behind Stevenson during his speech. Stevenson shakes hands with fellow candidate Lyndon B. Johnson, then Senate Majority Leader.
