Carroll Clark Bryan was born in 1910 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was a graduate of Grinnell College (1931) and Harvard Law School (1934). He married Harriet “Betty” Bair in November 1941. Bryan served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. The family settled in Elmhurst, Illinois after the war, and had six children: Carolyn, Barbara, Susan, Jean, Clark Jr. ("Buzzy") and Frederick. Bryan was an active member of the Elmhurst First Congregational Church where he sang in the choir for 45 years. He was a violinist in the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. He passed away on June 6, 1997.
Bryan, Harriet "Betty" Bair

Born 1918 in Albany, N.Y., Harriet “Betty” Bair grew up in Colorado and Ohio. She received a bachelor’s degree in piano and English from Grinnell College in Iowa in 1939. After college, she moved to New York City, where she worked as a lab assistant and as a typist for Life magazine.
After marrying C. Clark Bryan in November 1941, Betty moved with him to Worcester, Mass. During World War II, her husband served in the Merchant Marine, so Betty moved home with her parents for a time in Bronxville, N.Y.
After the war, the Bryans settled in Elmhurst, Illinois. They had six children: Carolyn, Barbara, Susan, Jean, Clark Jr. ("Buzzy") and Frederick. Betty became active in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday school, led youth groups, sang in the choir and oversaw Christian education. She was a longtime member of the River Forest Country Club, where she was the women’s champion in golf in 1968.
In 1990, Betty and Clark moved to the Lexington Square retirement community in Elmhurst. Clark died in 1997 and her daughter, Barbara, died in 2016. Another son, Clark Jr., died in 1954. Bryan passed away in 2018 at age 99.
