Born in Vilna, Poland (now Lithuania), Charles Phineas Schwartz and his family emigrated to Norway, Michigan, a small town in the Upper Peninsula, where they joined relatives who had already moved there. Charles’ father opened a general store and eventually was able to send all five of his children to college.
Starting in 1904, Charles attended the University of Chicago as both an undergrad and as a law school student. While serving as secretary to Judge Julian W. Mack, who established the first juvenile court, Charles came to know the Hull House. For a time he resided at the Jane Addams Hull house where he became Jane’s “pet” and eventually her good friend. Any tendencies that Charles had towards social justice and civic responsibility were developed here. He struck up a friendship with Carl Sandberg and served as the attorney for the Hull House. It was during these times that he ran an unsuccessful campaign for Congress under the Bull Moose Party.
In 1920, Charles married Lavinia “Duffy” Schulman, a Vassar graduate, and they bought a home at 5135 South Woodlawn in the Hyde Park neighborhood. Lavinia’s father was the first electrical contractor (and engineer) in the city and had a business called A. S. Schulman Electric Company. Some of Schulman’s clients were the Merchandise Mart, the Wrigley Building, and the Field Museum. Eventually Charles became the General Counsel for his father-in-law’s company as well.
Charles and Duffy had three children: Polly Schwartz (Polly Schwartz Hertz) (1921); Robert Schwartz (1925); and Charles Schwartz, Jr. (1927). During the Depression, Duffy worked for CBS radio, the first commercial radio station in Chicago. It was during the late 1920s that Charles, Sr. began taking home movies with his 16mm camera. He filmed his son Charles right after his birth at Michael Reese Hospital, family vacations in Herbster, Wisconsin and Charlevoix, Michigan, and his daughter Polly’s wedding across the street from the Oriental Museum in Hyde Park. Charles, Sr. died in 1975.
