Abstract
Scenes from a gallery event for the ‘Phalanx 3’ exhibit at Herman Hall of the Illinois Institute of Technology. Sixty-seven artists—including Rodney Quiriconi, and several artists associated with the Chicago Imagists/Hairy Who—were represented with 143 works. According to the catalog statement it was “… a continuing effort to satisfy the need for vigorous and uninhibited exhibitions … only by commitment and action can the present ‘constriction’ of the ‘local art scene’ be arrested. ‘Phalanx 3,’ organized and financed by the artists themselves, poses an alternative to the lethargy and ennui that substitutes for a ‘cultural climate’ in Chicago.” Karl Wirsum's piece Untitled (Study for Tongue Tied), is prominent at the beginning of the reel.
