Abstract
Silent black-and-white footage follows poet Gwendolyn Brooks on her commute from her home in Greater Grand Crossing to the Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) campus in North Park. Brooks taught creative writing at NEIU from 1965 to 1968; in 1968, NEIU President Jerome Sachs appointed her Poet in Residence, honoring her impact as both an artist and an educator.
Description
Begins with footage of Gwendolyn Brooks leaving her home at 7428 S Evans Ave, at which she resided from 1953 until 1994. She walks to Gable's Foods and Liquors at 710 E 75th St and buys snacks from a clerk. Brooks catches a north-bound CTA bus at S Cottage Grove Ave, which she takes to the Cottage Grove ‘L’ station at E 63rd St in Woodlawn. She transfers trains at Fullerton station in Lincoln Park, eventually exiting at Kimball and walking to the NEIU campus at N St. Louis Ave and W Bryn Mawr Ave. Brooks walks the halls to her classroom, where she shares cookies with her small class of students and lectures from a podium.
