Abstract
A work created for the 2023 CFA Media Mixer by artist/filmmaker Zachary Hutchinson and sound artist Haruhi Kobayashi.
Description
Description provided by the artists:
This work was made largely from footage shot by the prolific Tom Palazzolo. Palazzolo made some amazing and rare documentation of queer life in the mid-1970s. This post-Stone Wall (1969) and pre-AIDS/HIV Epidemic (1981) time period is a short but beautifully hopeful time, so to have a record of it is astonishing and incredibly important. This video piece is made in reaction to the current political climate, where LGBTQIA+ people have become a scapegoat for right-wing extremist politics. These lawmakers aim to create legislation that will undoubtedly affect trans people's rights and lives in violent and irreparable ways. In this video piece, important historic footage of queer people from time past has been arranged in a way that not only celebrates them but also shows that LGBTQIA+ people have been through this before and survived.
