“I started with an image which I thought was very funny - filmmaker John Heinz, my partner of several years at that time, running naked toward the camera in the apartment at 116 W. Hubbard St., Chicago, with an exaggerated leg-pumping motion, his penis flapping side to side. Several of John's films featured nude women in semi-comic, semi-erotic scenarios, most notably in his Discovery of the Body trilogy. I wanted to work with a naked male form, as it seemed fewer women filmmakers were filming their men as opposed to men filming their women. I also wanted the inherent comedy of the naked male body with its little appendage hanging loose to make its own statement. ARROWS screened in a program of shorts by local filmmakers at the Film Center of the School of the Art Institute, back when the Film Center was still presenting its programs in Fullerton Hall in the museum.”
